Global stock markets rally as investors bet on AI-driven tech giants

U. S. Markets and Tech Giants

The S&P 500 rose 0.6 percent, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average advanced just 0.03 percent. Five of the Magnificent Sevenstocks climbed, led by Tesla, which surged 4.04 percent. Amazon gained 1.61 percent, while Apple and Alphabet rose 0.93 percent and 0.9 percent, respectively. Nvidia, the world's most valuable listed company, climbed nearly 1 percent after announcing a $3 billion investment in Meta's stock issuance. Meta fell 1.64 percent, and Microsoft dropped 0.24 percent. Other notable tech moves included Advanced Micro Devices, Broadcom, and Intel, which rose 5.45 percent, 4 percent, and 3.61 percent, respectively.

Asian Markets and SK Hynix Earnings

Asian markets continued to advance on Wednesday, with exchanges in Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, and Australia all rising. The KOSPI index in Seoul led the gains, climbing 5.84 percent as of 03:00 GMT. This surge followed an announcement from SK Hynix, one of the world's top three memory chipmakers, which reported exceptional third-quarter results on Wednesday. Its operating profit exploded by approximately 630 percent year-over-year, reaching 83.33 trillion won ($62.8 billion). SK Hynix shares listed in South Korea jumped more than 8 percent after the earnings release. In Tokyo, the Nikkei 225 rose 1.26 percent, while the TAIEX in Taipei climbed 1.32 percent. The S&P/ASX 200 in Sydney posted a modest 0.11 percent gain.

Earnings Season and AI Investment

Investors eagerly await earnings reports from major tech players, seeking to evaluate if their massive AI investments will yield dividends. Microsoft and Alphabet will publish their latest results on Wednesday, followed by Amazon on Thursday and Apple on Monday. On Monday, AI giant Anthropic filed documentation for its long-awaited public offering, reporting a net loss of $80.7 billion in the first half of 2026, on revenue of $16.3 billion. Tech companies have poured hundreds of billions of dollars each into AI infrastructure, fueling debates about a possible speculative bubble, similar to the one preceding the 2000 dot-com crash. Global AI investment is projected to reach $2.7 trillion in 2026 and $3.6 trillion in 2027, according to Gartner, a technology research firm.

Oil Prices and Middle East Conflict

Oil prices, which have remained elevated since the start of the US-Israel war against Iran, rose about 1 percent at the opening of Asian markets on Wednesday. This came against the backdrop of ongoing conflict in the Middle East, including clashes between Saudi Arabia and Iran-aligned Houthis in Yemen. Brent crude futures, the global benchmark, traded at approximately $115 per barrel, a 59 percent increase from pre-war levels.
