North Korea Fires Ten Ballistic Missiles Into Sea Off East Coast

Why are North and South Korea clashing?

South Korean military authorities announced heightened surveillance and readiness for potential additional launches. They maintained close information-sharing with the United States and Japan. Japan's Defense Ministry confirmed the missiles landed outside its Exclusive Economic Zone. This year, Pyongyang has conducted over ten missile tests. The latest salvo of short-range ballistic missiles was fired on October 12.

On September 21, three South Korean soldiers were injured when landmines exploded in the Demilitarized Zone. A joint investigation by South Korea and the UN determined that Pyongyang placed the mines south of the military demarcation line over a year ago. Pyongyang denied responsibility and warned of a response to any provocation. Kim Yo Jong, the powerful sister of leader Kim Jong Un, called South Korea's demand for an apology „disgraceful.”She also rejected Seoul's offer to provide medical equipment. Last week, North Korea announced plans to resume propaganda broadcasts along the border and deploy new weapon systems in the zone. South Korea then proposed negotiations to clarify the border and prevent accidental military confrontations. Pyongyang has not yet responded.

What is known about possible US-North Korea nuclear talks?

This escalation comes as recent initiatives by US President Donald Trump toward Pyongyang have raised concerns that South Korea might be left out of nuclear discussions. Although Seoul is a key ally of Washington, Trump's approach has fueled uncertainty about South Korea's role in any future talks with the North. The previous missile launch on October 12 occurred one day after Trump suggested he might meet with Kim Jong Un this year.
